City Center
St Etienne – France, 2013
The city of Saint-Étienne wanted the poles illuminating the main square to highlight local materials and craftsmanship. This is exemplified by the glass used here—a hand-blown glass coloured using medieval techniques.
At night, these luminous poles rhythmically animate the space. During the day, the sunlight passes through them, projecting colorful anamorphoses onto the ground.
Technique
Street lighting mats in stainless steel coloured glass.
Thirty stainless-steel lamp standards with hand-blown glass shades.
The blue glass shades were mass-dyed with cobalt, the orange-coloured ones with selenium.
